I can bear to watch maybe a half an hour of news a day. That's up from none. Unfortunately, our shared liberal depression is destroying MSNBC. Luckily for me, I'm at the end of my book. The last section was rough, so I continue to get ideas to improve it and it happily continues to be not quite done. We look at art, and read and watch TV and movies to sustain us. We saw Anora, which was a HUGE disappointment. Really? Quirkier Pretty Woman dragged out to 2 1/2 hours and most of the dialogue scrapped in favor of f***ing? Some nice performances. But then we watched Small Things Like These, which is going somewhere on my best movies ever list - top 20 if not top 10.
Ugh. I never want to see another male writer/director's fantasy of a female sex worker again. Just NO.
The writer of Pretty Woman was a friend and believe me, he was horrified about what the studio/director did with his savage script about a businessman's misogyny. Complete overhaul and gutting of his original.
I'm just flummoxed why Anora won all these awards. My husband and I felt pretty much the same way about it. A friend who watched it with us liked it and thought it was very funny. He even called it "madcap." ?? But when I sent my review to my family, one 30ish niece said she loved it and was laughing so hard she cried through most of the movie. It's truly baffling.

Well...there's Leaving Las Vegas.
Jennifer Jason Leigh is the exception to almost every rule.
